The Guardian
Meme of the Year
In 2012 Cecilia Gimenez attempted to restore a weathered fresco in Spain called the Ecce Homo. While the "the original painting was of little artistic importance" (Wiki), the painting quickly became infamous. In light of this, I and a small team of friends at work, including the very talented creative team AK Parker and Viv Yapp, speedily put together a fun website where users could 'restore' their own Ecce Homo.

We called it The Cecilia Prize, and it was an over night success. It went viral, reaching 1 million hits in two weeks.

It also went on to win a number of awards and was picked as the Guardian Meme of the Year 2012. You can read about it on Time, Fast Co Create or the Huffington Post.
